Wrap Tiny Toes in Sweetness: The Cloudberry Cradle Booties

There is something truly magical about knitting for a new baby. Every stitch is a tiny hug, a wish for warmth and comfort. The Cloudberry Cradle Booties are designed to be just that—a modern heirloom that feels as cozy to knit as it is adorable to gift. Featuring a delicate, bumpy berry stitch on the cuff and a smooth, gentle fit, these booties are inspired by the soft, cloud-like texture of a ripe cloudberry. Whether you choose a soft 'Cloudberry Pink' or a fresh 'Moss Green', this free pattern is perfect for creating a unique, textured treasure for a little one's first steps (or first wiggles!).

Materials Needed

Before you begin, gather your supplies. This pattern uses simple, readily available materials to create a soft and durable finish.

  • Yarn: Worsted weight (#4) baby yarn. A 100% superwash merino wool or a soft acrylic blend works beautifully. You will need approximately 50 grams (100 yards) for one pair. The samples shown use 'Cloudberry Pink' and 'Moss Green'.
  • Needles: US 6 (4.0 mm) double-pointed needles (DPNs) or a 16-inch circular needle for the magic loop method.
  • Notions: Stitch markers, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and a small amount of waste yarn for a provisional cast-on (optional).
  • Gauge: 20 stitches and 28 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch, after blocking. Getting the correct gauge is important for the perfect fit.

Step-by-Step Instructions

These booties are worked from the toe up, in the round. The instructions are given for the Newborn (0-3 months) size, which has a 3.5-inch foot length. Instructions for the larger size are in parentheses.

Pattern Notes

  • The bootie is worked from the toe up. You can use a provisional cast-on or a simple long-tail cast-on for the toe.
  • The sole is shaped with increases, then the foot is worked in the round. The ankle is shaped with decreases, and the cuff is worked in a textured berry stitch.
  • The berry stitch pattern creates a bumpy, cloud-like texture that is both visually interesting and soft for baby's feet.

  • Round 3: *P1, K1*; rep from * to * around.

Finishing

Bind off loosely in pattern. Cut yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail. Weave in ends. Block gently by wetting and laying flat to dry, shaping the bootie.

To make the second bootie: Repeat all steps.

Optional: Add a simple i-cord tie or a small button for decoration (ensure safety for baby).
