Elegant Lacy Petal Shawl
Skill Level: Easy
Finished Size: Customizable. Base sample measures approximately 72” (183 cm) across wingspan x 12” (30 cm) deep along spine.
Materials
- Lightweight yarn (approx. 460 yd/420 m) - choose a soft, drapey blend such as cotton-acrylic
- US Size D-3/3.25 mm crochet hook, or size needed for gauge
- Stitch markers
- Yarn needle
Gauge
22 stitches x 12 rows = 4” (10 cm) in shell stitch pattern before blocking. Note: Exact gauge is not critical.
Special Stitches
- Shell: (5 dc in same stitch)
- Petal Cluster: (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in same stitch
Pattern Notes
This shawl is worked in a series of rows, starting wide and gradually decreasing to form lovely petal shapes towards the edges.
Pattern Instructions
- Chain 180 for foundation chain.
- Row 1: Double crochet in the 4th chain from the hook, then dc across to end. Turn.
- Row 2: Chain 3 (counts as first dc), *skip 2 stitches, shell in next stitch; repeat from * to end, ending with a dc in the last stitch. Turn.
- Row 3: Chain 3, (1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc) in the first shell, *petal cluster in the next shell; repeat from * to end, finish with a dc in the last stitch. Turn.
- Rows 4-10: Repeat Rows 2-3. Work until the shawl measures approximately 12” from foundation chain.
- Row 11: Continue with a decrease pattern, skipping the last shell of each repeat while maintaining petal clusters. Turn.
- Repeat the last row until desired depth is reached, approximately 6” deep.
- Finish with a scalloped edge by working 1 shell in each of the last stitches along the edge.
- Weave in any loose ends and block to shape.
