Crochet Market Bag Pattern

This crochet market bag is a versatile and eco-friendly option for shopping or carrying your essentials. With its lightweight and flexible construction, you’ll love using it every day!

Materials Needed:

  • Lightweight cotton yarn (around 200-300 yards)
  • Size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure

Gauge:

16 stitches and 14 rows = 4 inches in double crochet (DC). Gauge is not critical for this project.

Abbreviations:

  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • tr = treble crochet
  • st(s) = stitch(es)

Instructions:

Base of the Bag:

  1. Make a slip knot and chain 4 (join with a slip stitch to form a ring).
  2. Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as first DC here and throughout), work 11 DC into the ring. Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3. (12 DC)
  3. Round 2: Ch 3, DC in the same st, *2 DC in the next st; repeat from * around. Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3. (24 DC)
  4. Round 3: Ch 3, DC in the same st, *DC in the next st, 2 DC in the next st; repeat from * around. Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3. (36 DC)
  5. Round 4: Ch 3, DC in the same st, *DC in the next 2 st, 2 DC in the next st; repeat from * around. Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3. (48 DC)

Bag Body:

  1. Continue working in rounds without joining after this point.
  2. Round 5: Ch 3, DC in each st around. (48 DC)
  3. Round 6: Ch 3, *DC in the next 4 sts, ch 1, skip the next st; repeat from * around. (48 DC, 12 ch-1 spaces)
  4. Round 7-15: Ch 3, *DC in the next 4 sts, work 1 DC in each ch-1 space; repeat from * around. (48 DC)

Top of the Bag:

  1. Round 16: Ch 1, sc in each st around. (48 sc)
  2. Round 17: Ch 1, *sc in the next 3 sts, ch 4, skip the next st; repeat from * around. (12 ch-4 spaces)
  3. Round 18: Ch 1, sc in each sc and work 4 sc in each ch-4 space. Join with sl st to the first sc. (72 sc)

Straps:

Make 2 straps:

  1. Ch 100 for each strap (or desired length).
  2. Sc in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across.
  3. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Assembly:

Attach the straps to the bag by sewing the ends securely to the top edge of the bag at opposite sides.

Finishing:

Weave in all loose ends with the yarn needle. Your crochet market bag is now complete!

Care Instructions:

Hand wash your bag in cool water and lay flat to dry.
