Seaside Cobblestone Bobble Cap — Free Beginner Crochet Pattern

Introduction

If you have never held a crochet hook before, this is the perfect first hat for you. The Seaside Cobblestone Bobble Cap is a cozy little baby beanie with a smooth emerald crown and a dense blush band of round bobbles that look exactly like pebbles on a beach. It is worked in simple joined rounds, so you never have to turn your work or juggle complicated shaping — just one easy stitch repeated around and around. The finished hat is soft, squishy, and stretchy, sized for a 6–12 month baby, and it feels like a warm hug in DK merino wool. Best of all, the only "fancy" stitch is a bobble, and we will walk you through it one loop at a time.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: DK weight (also called light worsted / category 3) merino wool, approximately 125 yds / 115 m per 50 g skein.
    • 1 skein Emerald (Color A) — sample uses about 55 yds
    • 1 skein Blush (Color B) — sample uses about 45 yds
  • Hook: 4.0 mm (US G-6) crochet hook, or the size you need to match gauge.
  • Stitch marker: 1 (to mark the first stitch of each round).
  • Tapestry needle: a blunt-tipped yarn needle for weaving in ends.
  • Scissors for cutting yarn.
  • Optional: a small bowl or balloon for blocking.

Finished size: Fits head circumference 17–18 in / 43–46 cm (6–12 months). Finished hat circumference 16.5 in / 42 cm unstretched; height 6.5 in / 16.5 cm from crown to lower edge. Crown circle diameter 5.25 in / 13.5 cm.

Abbreviations and Beginner Glossary

  • ch — chain: yarn over the hook and pull it through the loop on your hook. This makes a small link.
  • sl st — slip stitch: insert hook into the stitch, yarn over, and pull through both the stitch and the loop on your hook at once. Used to join rounds.
  • sc — single crochet: insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through both loops. (1 loop remains.)
  • dc — double crochet: yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull through last 2 loops. (1 loop remains.)
  • dc2tog — double crochet 2 together: a decrease that turns 2 stitches into 1. (Not used in this pattern, but listed so you recognize it.)
  • bobble — 4-dc bobble: work 4 double crochets into the same stitch, but leave the last loop of each dc on the hook (you will have 5 loops on the hook). Yarn over and pull through all 5 loops at once. Push the bobble to the front as you go.
  • st / sts — stitch / stitches.
  • sp — space (the gap between stitches).
  • rnd — round (one complete circle of stitches).
  • A — Emerald; B — Blush.
  • magic ring — an adjustable loop you make with your fingers to start working in the round; pull the tail to close the hole tight.
  • join — finish a round by working a sl st into the top of the first stitch of that round.

Gauge

16 dc x 9 rounds = 4 in / 10 cm in double crochet after blocking. One 4-dc bobble measures approximately 0.75 in / 2 cm wide.

Why gauge matters: Gauge is how big your stitches turn out. If your stitches are bigger than the pattern's, the hat will be too large; if smaller, it will be too tight. How to swatch: With Color A and your 4.0 mm hook, chain 20, then work 10 rows of dc. Lay the swatch flat and measure a 4-inch section across the middle — you should count about 16 stitches and 9 rows. If you have more stitches, go up a hook size; if fewer, go down a hook size. Wash and dry your swatch the way you will wash the hat before measuring.

Beginner Tips Before You Start

  • Use a stitch marker. Place it in the first stitch of each round so you always know where the round begins and ends.
  • Do not pull your yarn too tight. Tension should be relaxed — tight stitches make a stiff, small hat and make bobbles hard to work.
  • Count every round. The stitch count in parentheses at the end of each round is your safety net. If it does not match, rip back and try again.
  • Keep bobbles on the wrong-side rounds. Bobbles are always worked on the rounds marked "bobble round" so they pop out to the right side of the hat.
  • Push each bobble to the front as soon as you finish it, so it does not get trapped inside the fabric.
  • Work the ch-3 at the start of each dc round loosely — it counts as your first double crochet.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Special Stitch — 4-dc Bobble

Work 4 dc into the same stitch, but leave the last loop of each dc on the hook (5 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through all 5 loops. Push the bobble to the front (wrong side of work) as you go. Bobbles are always worked on wrong-side rounds so they pop to the right side.

Crown (Emerald, Color A)

Rnd 1: With A, make a magic ring. Ch 3 (counts as first dc), work 11 dc into ring. Join with sl st to top of ch-3. (12 dc)

Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same st. 2 dc in each st around. Join. (24 dc)

Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in next st. *2 dc in next st, dc in next st; rep from * around. Join. (36 dc)

Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in each of next 2 sts. *2 dc in next st, dc in each of next 2 sts; rep from * around. Join. (48 dc)

Rnd 5: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in each of next 3 sts. *2 dc in next st, dc in each of next 3 sts; rep from * around. Join. (60 dc)

Rnd 6: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in each of next 4 sts. *2 dc in next st, dc in each of next 4 sts; rep from * around. Join. (72 dc)

Crown should measure approximately 5.25 in / 13.5 cm across. Do not increase further.

Assembly and Finishing

Weave in ends: Thread each yarn tail onto your tapestry needle. Turn the hat inside out and weave the tail back and forth through the back of several stitches (about 1 inch), then trim close to the fabric. Do not knot — weaving hides the tail securely.

Pop the bobbles: Gently push all bobbles to the right side of the work with your fingers so they sit proud like pebbles.

Block: Lightly mist the hat with water and shape it over a small bowl or a balloon to the finished measurements (16.5 in / 42 cm circumference, 6.5 in / 16.5 cm tall). Allow it to dry completely. Do not press the bobbles flat with an iron — heat will crush them.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Color changes: Swap Emerald for navy or sage and Blush for cream or sand for a different coastal palette. Change colors on the last pull-through of the final stitch of a round for a clean join.
  • Size adjustments: For a smaller 3–6 month fit, omit Rnd 6 of the crown (60 dc) and work Rnds 7–19 as written; finished circumference approx. 15 in / 38 cm. For a larger 12–24 month fit, add one more increase round (84 dc) and work one extra smooth Emerald round before the Blush section.
  • Yarn substitution: Any DK weight yarn works — cotton gives a crisper, lighter hat; acrylic is easy to wash. Always check your gauge first.
  • Bobble density: For a chunkier pebble band, work a bobble in every stitch on the bobble rounds (72 bobbles) instead of alternating with dc.
