Materials

  • Yarn: DK weight in two colors
  • Needles: US size 6 (4mm) knitting needles
  • Buttons: 2 wooden, 1" diameter
  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle

Abbreviations

  • CO: Cast on
  • BO: Bind off
  • k: knit
  • p: purl
  • st(s): stitches

Instructions

Ribbing (Bottom Hem)

  1. CO 100 sts using color A.
  2. Work in 1x1 ribbing (k1, p1) for 5 rows.

Body

  1. Switch to stockinette stitch. Begin striping pattern: Color B for 6 rows, Color A for 6 rows. Repeat until the piece measures 8 inches from the CO edge.

Shaping the Armholes

  1. Bind off 5 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows (90 sts remaining).
  2. Decrease 1 st at each edge every other row 5 times (80 sts remaining).

Top Section

  1. Continue even in pattern until the piece reaches 12 inches from the CO edge.
  2. Divide for straps: Work 20 sts, place the next 40 sts on a holder, work remaining 20 sts.

Straps

  1. Work each set of 20 sts separately in ribbing (k1, p1) for 4 inches.
  2. BO and secure.

Finishing

  1. Attach buttons on the main body base where the straps end.
  2. Weave in all ends using the tapestry needle.
