Hat Body

Step 1: Cast On and Join
Using grey yarn and your circular needles, cast on 64 (72) [80] sts. Carefully join in the round, being extremely careful not to twist your stitches. Place a stitch marker at the beginning of the round to mark your starting point.

Step 2: Knit the Body
Work in stockinette stitch by knitting every round. Continue knitting until the piece measures 4 (5) [6] inches from the cast-on edge. Use your measuring tape to check the length periodically. The fabric should be smooth and even, with the right side facing out.

Decrease for Crown

Now you'll shape the top of the hat with a series of decrease rounds. This creates the rounded crown that fits snugly on your little one's head.

Rnd 1: *K6, K2tog* repeat to end of round. You should now have 56 (63) [70] sts.
Rnd 2 and all even rounds: Knit all stitches (no decreases).
Rnd 3: *K5, K2tog* repeat to end. You should now have 48 (54) [60] sts.
Rnd 5: *K4, K2tog* repeat to end. You should now have 40 (45) [50] sts.
Rnd 7: *K3, K2tog* repeat to end. You should now have 32 (36) [40] sts.
Rnd 9: *K2, K2tog* repeat to end. You should now have 24 (27) [30] sts.
Rnd 11: *K1, K2tog* repeat to end. You should now have 16 (18) [20] sts.
