Striped Cozy Socks
These cozy striped socks are designed to keep your toes toasty warm on chilly days. With bright orange and red stripes, they add a splash of color, making them a fun project for knitters of all skill levels.
Materials:
- Worsted weight yarn in the following colors:
- Color A: Orange (200 yards)
- Color B: Red (200 yards)
- Color C: White (100 yards)
- Size 5 (3.75 mm) double-pointed needles or circular needle for magic loop technique
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
- Stitch marker
Gauge:
16 stitches and 22 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch.
Abbreviations:
- K: Knit
- P: Purl
- St: Stitch
- CO: Cast On
- BO: Bind Off
- Rnd: Round
- Rep: Repeat
Instructions:
- Cast On: Using Color A, CO 48 stitches. Distribute the stitches evenly across 4 needles (12 st per needle) and join in the round, being careful not to twist your stitches.
- Ribbing: For the first 2 inches, K2, P2 around until you reach the desired height of the cuff.
- Change to Stockinette Stitch: Switch to knitting every round (K all rounds) for the next 4 inches.
- Begin Striping: Alternate colors for each round:
- Round 1: Switch to Color B (Red), K all stitches.
- Round 2: Switch to Color C (White), K all stitches.
- Repeat these two rounds until you reach 2 inches of striping.
- Heel Flap:
- With Color A, K24, then turn your work (leave the other half on hold).
- Row 1: *Slip 1, K1; rep from * across. (This creates the slip stitch heel).
- Row 2: Slip 1, P across.
- Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until the heel measures 2.5 inches.
- Turn Heel:
- Row 1: K12, K2tog, K1, turn your work.
- Row 2: P4, P2tog, P1, turn your work.
- Row 3: K5, K2tog, K1, turn your work.
- Row 4: P6, P2tog, P1, turn your work.
- Continue this process until you have 12 stitches left on your needle.
- Pick Up Stitches:
- Pick up 12 stitches along the sides of the heel flap.
- Join your held stitches (from the top of the foot) back into the work, placing a stitch marker.
- Pick up 12 more stitches along the other side of the heel flap (total: 48 stitches).
- Gusset Decreases:
- Continue in stockinette, K until you have 12 stitches before the marker, K2tog, K1.
- Knitting all in between, on the next round, P2tog at the end of the round.
- Repeat these decreases every other round until you have a total of 24 stitches left.
- Foot:
- Continue in stockinette until the foot measures 2 inches less than desired length.
- Toe:
- Round 1: K until 8 stitches remain, K2tog, K1.
- Round 2: K until 6 stitches remain, K2tog, K1.
- Continue decreasing until only 8 stitches remain.
- Bind off using the Kitchener stitch to create a seamless toe.
- Finishing:
- Weave in all ends using the tapestry needle.
- Block lightly if necessary.
- Your cozy striped socks are now ready to wear!
