Step-by-Step Instructions

Abbreviations

  • k = knit
  • p = purl
  • k2tog = knit two together
  • p2tog = purl two together
  • st(s) = stitch(es)
  • MC = Main Color
  • CC = Contrast Color

Hat Body (worked flat then seamed)

Step 1: With MC yarn, cast on 48 (56) stitches using your preferred method.

Step 2 (Row 1 - Right Side): *K2, p2; repeat from * to end of row.

Step 3 (Row 2 - Wrong Side): *P2, k2; repeat from * to end of row.

Step 4: Repeat Rows 1-2 until the piece measures 4 (5) inches from the cast-on edge, ending with a wrong side row. This creates the textured 2x2 rib pattern that gives the hat its cozy, stretchy fabric.

Crown Shaping (switch to DPNs when needed)

When stitches become too tight for circular needles, switch to double-pointed needles, distributing stitches evenly.

Row 1 (RS): *K6 (7), k2tog; repeat from * to end. (42, 49 sts)

Row 2 and all WS rows: Purl all stitches.

Row 3: *K5 (6), k2tog; repeat from * to end. (36, 42 sts)

Row 5: *K4 (5), k2tog; repeat from * to end. (30, 35 sts)

Row 7: *K3 (4), k2tog; repeat from * to end. (24, 28 sts)

Row 9: *K2 (3), k2tog; repeat from * to end. (18, 21 sts)

Row 11: *K1 (2), k2tog; repeat from * to end. (12, 14 sts)

Row 13: *K2tog; repeat from * to end. (6, 7 sts)

Step 5: Cut yarn, leaving a 12-inch tail. Thread the tail through the remaining stitches using a tapestry needle, pull tight to close the crown, and secure with a knot.

Seam

Step 6: With MC yarn and a tapestry needle, sew the back seam from the cast-on edge to the crown using mattress stitch. This creates an invisible, professional-looking seam.

Lamb Ears (make 2)

Step 7: With CC bouclé yarn, cast on 6 stitches.

Row 1 (RS): Knit all stitches.

Row 2 (WS): Purl all stitches.

Row 3: K1, k2tog, k2, k2tog, k1. (4 sts)

Row 4: Purl all stitches.

Row 5: K1, k2tog, k1. (3 sts)

Row 6: Purl all stitches.

Row 7: K1, k2tog. (2 sts)

Row 8: P2tog. (1 st)

Step 8: Cut yarn, pull through last stitch. Weave in ends.

Finishing

Step 9: Fold each ear in half lengthwise (the purl side will be inside) and sew the bottom edge together to create a small, rounded ear shape.

Step 10: Position ears on the hat about 1 inch from the top and 1.5 inches apart. Sew securely with MC yarn using a tapestry needle.

Step 11: Weave in all remaining ends. Block gently if desired by lightly steaming or wet-blocking to even out stitches.

Your Snuggle Cloud Lamb Hat is now complete! The combination of the dense, textured body and the fluffy, cloud-like ears creates a truly special heirloom piece that will keep your little one warm and stylish.
