Size & Abbreviations

Finished Size: Approximately 12 inches wide x 18 inches long

Stitches & Abbreviations (US terms):

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • bobble: (yo, insert hook, yo, pull up loop, yo, pull through 2 loops) 4 times in same st, yo, pull through all 5 loops on hook
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • MC: Main Color (Cream)
  • WS: Wrong Side
  • RS: Right Side

Pattern Notes

  • The placemat is worked flat in rows.
  • The bobble stitch creates the terrazo 'speckles'. They are worked on the wrong side, so they pop out on the right side.

Row 7 (WS): Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (48 sc)

Row 8 (RS): Ch 1, sc in first 3 sts, *bobble in next st, sc in next 3 sts; repeat from * across. Turn. (12 bobbles)

Rows 9-16: Repeat Rows 3-8, but on Row 12, change to Color A for the bobble stitches only (work sc rows in MC). To change color: On the last yo of the last bobble of Row 11, pull through Color A. Work Row 12 (RS) with Color A bobbles, then on the last sc of Row 12, change back to MC. Continue with MC for Rows 13-16.

Rows 17-24: Repeat Rows 3-8, using Color B for the bobble stitches on Row 20.

Rows 25-32: Repeat Rows 3-8, using Color C for the bobble stitches on Row 28.

Rows 33-40: Repeat Rows 3-8, using Color A for the bobble stitches on Row 36.
