Materials Needed
- Red worsted weight yarn
- White worsted weight yarn
- Size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
- Pompom maker or cardboard for pom-pom
Abbreviations
- ch: chain
- sc: single crochet
- hdc: half double crochet
- sl st: slip stitch
Instructions
Brim
- With white yarn, ch 41.
- Row 1: Starting in the second ch from hook, sc in each ch across. (40 sts)
- Row 2-5: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across. (40 sts)
- Join brim into a loop using sl st in each st across both ends. Turn to work in the round.
Main Hat
- Attach red yarn to any st on the edge of the brim.
- Round 1: Ch 1, hdc evenly around the edge of the brim. Join with sl st to first hdc. (Work approximately 44 hdc around.)
- Round 2-12: Ch 1, hdc in each st around. Join with sl st. (44 sts)
- Round 13: Ch 1, *hdc in next 9 sts, hdc2tog; repeat from * around. Join with sl st. (40 sts)
- Round 14-18: Ch 1, hdc in each st around. Join with sl st. (40 sts)
- Round 19: Ch 1, *hdc in next 8 sts, hdc2tog; repeat from * around. Join with sl st. (36 sts)
- Round 20-24: Ch 1, hdc in each st around. Join with sl st. (36 sts)
- Continue in this pattern, decreasing evenly by 4 sts every 5th round until top of hat closes. Finish off, leaving a long tail to sew up any remaining gap.
Pompom
- Using white yarn, create a pom-pom using a pompom maker or cardboard.
- Attach pom-pom securely to the point of the hat.
Finishing
- Weave in all ends using a tapestry needle.
