Crochet Classic Festive Santa Hat Free Pattern

Materials Needed

  • Red worsted weight yarn
  • White worsted weight yarn
  • Size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Pompom maker or cardboard for pom-pom

Abbreviations

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • sl st: slip stitch

Instructions

Brim

  1. With white yarn, ch 41.
  2. Row 1: Starting in the second ch from hook, sc in each ch across. (40 sts)
  3. Row 2-5: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across. (40 sts)
  4. Join brim into a loop using sl st in each st across both ends. Turn to work in the round.

Main Hat

  1. Attach red yarn to any st on the edge of the brim.
  2. Round 1: Ch 1, hdc evenly around the edge of the brim. Join with sl st to first hdc. (Work approximately 44 hdc around.)
  3. Round 2-12: Ch 1, hdc in each st around. Join with sl st. (44 sts)
  4. Round 13: Ch 1, *hdc in next 9 sts, hdc2tog; repeat from * around. Join with sl st. (40 sts)
  5. Round 14-18: Ch 1, hdc in each st around. Join with sl st. (40 sts)
  6. Round 19: Ch 1, *hdc in next 8 sts, hdc2tog; repeat from * around. Join with sl st. (36 sts)
  7. Round 20-24: Ch 1, hdc in each st around. Join with sl st. (36 sts)
  8. Continue in this pattern, decreasing evenly by 4 sts every 5th round until top of hat closes. Finish off, leaving a long tail to sew up any remaining gap.

Pompom

  1. Using white yarn, create a pom-pom using a pompom maker or cardboard.
  2. Attach pom-pom securely to the point of the hat.

Finishing

  • Weave in all ends using a tapestry needle.
