Materials Needed
- Medium weight cotton yarn (approx. 200-250 yards in grey)
- Size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Gauge
16 stitches and 8 rows = 4 inches in double crochet.
Abbreviations
- ch = chain
- dc = double crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- St(s) = stitch(es)
Instructions
Body of the Tote
- Start by making a slip knot and chaining 30. This will form the base of your tote.
- Row 1: In the 4th chain from the hook, make 1 dc. DC in the next 26 ch, then in the last ch, make 2 dc. Now working on the opposite side of the chain, DC in the next 27 ch until you reach the end. You should have a total of 58 stitches. Turn your work.
- Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as the first dc), DC in the next stitch. *Ch 1, skip the next stitch, DC in the next stitch.* Repeat from * to * across the row, ending with a DC in the last stitch. Turn your work.
- Repeat Row 2 until your piece measures approximately 16 inches in height or until you reach your desired size. You can make the body taller if you prefer a larger tote.
Top Edging
- Once you reach the desired height, chain 1 and make a round of sl st around the top of the tote to finish it off neatly. This will also help to create a sturdy edge.
Straps
- For the straps, attach the yarn to the top edge using a sl st. Chain 70 (or adjust for desired length). Sl st into the edge of the tote to create a loop.
- Repeat this step for the other side, ensuring both straps are equal in length. This creates a comfortable shoulder strap for carrying your tote.
Finishing
- Weave in all loose ends with a tapestry needle.
- Block your tote if desired, to help shape it and even out your stitches.
