Crochet Tote Bag

Materials

  • Medium weight cotton yarn in two colors (soft pink and dark brown)
  • Size G/6 (4.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure

Gauge

12 stitches and 14 rows = 4 inches in single crochet.

Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • st = stitch
  • rep = repeat
  • rnd = round

Instructions

Note: Work in continuous rounds without joining unless otherwise noted.

Body of the Bag

  1. With the dark brown yarn, make a magic ring.
  2. Round 1: Work 6 sc into the magic ring. (6 sc)
  3. Round 2: 2 sc in each st around. (12 sc)
  4. Round 3: *1 sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st; repeat from * around. (18 sc)
  5. Round 4: *1 sc in the next 2 sts, 2 sc in the next st; repeat from * around. (24 sc)
  6. Round 5-12: 1 sc in each st around. (24 sc)

Color Change

  1. Round 13: Switch to the soft pink yarn. 1 sc in each st around. (24 sc)
  2. Round 14-16: Continue with the soft pink yarn and work 1 sc in each st around. (24 sc)

Finishing the Top

  1. Round 17: *Ch 1, skip the next st, 1 sc in the next st; repeat from * around. (12 sc, 12 ch-1 spaces)
  2. Round 18: 1 sc in each ch-1 space. (12 sc)
  3. Round 19: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st around. (12 sc)
  4. Fasten off and weave in all ends with a yarn needle.

Handles

  1. Attach the dark brown yarn at the top edge of the bag.
  2. Ch 8, skip the first ch, and join to the next ch with a sl st to form a loop.
  3. Ch 1, work 1 sc into the loop. Repeat this for 6 more rounds, creating a thick handle.
  4. Fasten off and repeat for the other side.

Final Touches

Once both handles are complete, make sure to weave in any remaining yarn ends. Your stylish crochet tote bag is now ready to use!
