Materials Needed

Step-by-Step Instructions
Abbreviations
- CO = cast on
- K = knit
- P = purl
- K2tog = knit two together
- SSK = slip slip knit
- M1L = make one left
- M1R = make one right
- PM = place marker
- SM = slip marker
- MC = Main Color
- CC = Contrast Color
Stocking (worked from top down)
Leg
- With MC and larger circular needle, CO 60 stitches. Join in the round, being careful not to twist. PM for beginning of round.
- Work 10 rounds of K1, P1 ribbing.
- Switch to stockinette stitch (knit every round).
- Work 2 rounds in MC.
- Begin Fair Isle pattern:
- Round 1 (CC): *K2 MC, K2 CC* repeat around.
- Round 2 (CC): *K2 CC, K2 MC* repeat around.
- Round 3 (MC): Knit all stitches.
- Round 4 (CC): *K1 MC, K1 CC* repeat around.
- Round 5 (CC): *K1 CC, K1 MC* repeat around.
- Round 6 (MC): Knit all stitches.
- Repeat these 6 rounds until leg measures 8 inches from cast-on edge, ending with a Round 6.
Heel Flap
- Transfer the first 30 stitches to one DPN (heel stitches), leaving the remaining 30 stitches on hold for the instep.
- Work back and forth on the 30 heel stitches:
- Row 1 (WS): Slip 1 purlwise, purl across.
- Row 2 (RS): *Slip 1 knitwise, K1* repeat across.
- Repeat these 2 rows for 30 rows total (15 slipped stitches on each side).
Turn Heel
- Row 1 (RS): K17, SSK, K1, turn.
- Row 2 (WS): Slip 1, P5, P2tog, P1, turn.
- Row 3: Slip 1, K6, SSK, K1, turn.
- Row 4: Slip 1, P7, P2tog, P1, turn.
- Continue in this manner, working one more stitch before the decrease each time, until all stitches are worked. You should have 18 stitches remaining.
Gusset
- With MC, pick up and knit 15 stitches along the left side of the heel flap. Place marker.
- Knit across the 30 instep stitches (maintaining Fair Isle pattern if desired, or continue in MC). Place marker.
- Pick up and knit 15 stitches along the right side of the heel flap.
- Knit across the 18 heel stitches. Total stitches: 78.
Decrease Rounds
- Round 1: Knit to 3 stitches before first marker, K2tog, K1, SM, knit instep stitches, SM, K1, SSK, knit to end.
- Round 2: Knit all stitches.
- Repeat these 2 rounds until 60 stitches remain (30 instep, 30 sole).
Foot
Continue in stockinette stitch (MC or Fair Isle pattern as desired) until foot measures 6 inches from heel turn, or desired length.
Toe
- Switch to smaller DPNs.
- Round 1: *K13, K2tog* repeat around (56 stitches).
- Round 2: Knit all stitches.
- Round 3: *K12, K2tog* repeat around (52 stitches).
- Continue decreasing every other round, working one fewer stitch between decreases each time, until 20 stitches remain.
- Cut yarn, thread through remaining stitches, pull tight, and weave in ends.
Hanging Loop
- With MC, CO 20 stitches.
- Knit 4 rows.
- Bind off.
- Sew ends to inside of stocking at top edge.
Weave in all ends securely. Block gently if desired. Your Glimmering Frost Stocking is now ready to hang and enjoy!
