Step-by-Step Instructions
Sizes & Abbreviations
Sizes: 12-18 months (18-24 months). Finished waist: 20 (22) inches. Finished inseam: 9 (10) inches.
Abbreviations: CO = cast on, K = knit, P = purl, K2tog = knit two together, SSK = slip slip knit, M1L = make one left, M1R = make one right, PM = place marker, SM = slip marker, BO = bind off, WS = wrong side, RS = right side.
Pattern Stitch (Wave Ridge)
Worked over a multiple of 6 stitches.
- Round 1: *K3, P3; repeat from * around.
- Round 2: Knit all stitches.
- Round 3: *P1, K3, P2; repeat from * around.
- Round 4: Knit all stitches.
- Repeat these 4 rounds for the pattern.
Pants Construction (Worked top-down, in the round, with a split back for diaper/car seat access)
Waistband
CO 100 (110) stitches onto the 16-inch circular needle. Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist. PM to mark beginning of round. Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 1.5 inches.
Body (Split Back)
Next Round: K50 (55) stitches (front), then turn work. You will now work back and forth on the remaining 50 (55) stitches for the back split.
Work back and forth in stockinette stitch (K on RS, P on WS) for 2 inches, ending with a WS row. Cut yarn. Slip the front 50 (55) stitches onto a holder or spare needle.
Rejoin yarn to the back stitches, ready to work a RS row. Work back and forth in stockinette for another 2 inches, ending with a WS row. The back split is now 4 inches total.
Join for Legs
Place all 100 (110) stitches back onto the 16-inch circular needle. PM at the center of the front and back (50/55 stitches each). Work in the round in the Wave Ridge pattern for 3 (4) inches.
Shape Crotch (Short Rows)
You will now work short rows to create a curved crotch for diaper room.
- Row 1 (RS): K to 5 stitches before the back marker, wrap and turn.
- Row 2 (WS): P to 5 stitches before the front marker, wrap and turn.
- Row 3: K to 3 stitches before the last wrapped stitch, wrap and turn.
- Row 4: P to 3 stitches before the last wrapped stitch, wrap and turn.
- Repeat Rows 3-4 two more times (total of 8 short rows).
- Next Round: Knit all stitches, working wraps together with wrapped stitches.
Separate Legs
K50 (55) stitches for the first leg. Place the remaining 50 (55) stitches on a holder or waste yarn for the second leg.
Leg
Work the first leg in the round on DPNs or using the magic loop method. Continue in the Wave Ridge pattern until the leg measures 7 (8) inches from the crotch, or desired length.
Leg Cuff
Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 1 inch. BO loosely in pattern.
Second Leg
Place the held stitches onto DPNs. Join yarn and work the second leg identically to the first.
Finishing
Weave in all ends. Block the pants gently to open up the stitch pattern and even out the fabric. The split back allows for easy diaper changes and car seat harness access.
