Anonymous August 05, 2026
[Yarn over, insert hook into the designated stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop] 4 times. You will have 9 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 9 loops, then chain 1 to close the puff securely.

Crown Increases (Rounds 1-14)

We'll start by creating a flat circle that will form the top of the hat. Work these rounds in continuous spiral or join with a slip stitch—whichever you prefer, as long as you keep your stitch count accurate.

  1. Round 1: With MC, make a magic ring. Work 6 single crochet (sc) into the ring. Pull the tail to tighten the ring closed. (6 sts)
  2. Round 2: Work 2 sc in each stitch around. (12 sts)
  3. Round 3: *Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st* repeat around. (18 sts)
  4. Round 4: *Sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st* repeat around. (24 sts)
  5. Round 5: *Sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st* repeat around. (30 sts)
  6. Round 6: *Sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st* repeat around. (36 sts)
  7. Round 7: *Sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st* repeat around. (42 sts)
  8. Round 8: *Sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st* repeat around. (48 sts)
  9. Round 9: *Sc in next 7 sts, 2 sc in next st* repeat around. (54 sts)
  10. Round 10: *Sc in next 8 sts, 2 sc in next st* repeat around. (60 sts)
  11. Round 11: *Sc in next 9 sts, 2 sc in next st* repeat around. (66 sts)
  12. Round 12: *Sc in next 10 sts, 2 sc in next st* repeat around. (72 sts)
  13. Rounds 13-14: Sc in each stitch around. (72 sts) – This creates a slight dome shape before the puff pattern begins.

Puff Stitch Body (Rounds 15-24)

Now we'll add the beautiful, textured puff stitches. The key is to stagger the puffs in alternating rounds to create a honeycomb-like effect.

  1. Round 15: Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch). *Puff in next st, sc in next st* repeat around. (36 puffs, 36 sc)
  2. Round 16: Ch 1. *Sc in next st, puff in next st* repeat around. (36 puffs, 36 sc) – This staggers the puffs so they sit between the puffs of the previous round.
  3. Rounds 17-24: Repeat Rounds 15 and 16 four more times. You will have 8 total puff rounds. The hat should now measure about 6-7 inches from the crown.

Shamrock Motif Band (Rounds 25-27)

Time to switch to your Contrast Color (CC) to create the charming shamrock band. This is where the Irish charm really shines!

  1. Round 25: With CC, ch 1. *Sc in next st, ch 3, skip 2 sts, sc in next st* repeat around. (24 ch-3 loops)
  2. Round 26: Slip stitch (sl st) into the first ch-3 loop. *In each ch-3 loop work the following leaf cluster: [sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc]
