Notes Before You Begin

The shawl is worked from the top down, increasing at the center and edges.
Use a stitch marker to mark the center stitch throughout the pattern.

k = knit
p = purl
sl1 wyif = slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in front

Setup

Cast on 3 stitches with Color A (Light Sand).

Row 2 (Wrong Side): k2, p1, k2

Section 1: Sand (Color A)

Continue with Color A. The center stitch will always be slipped with yarn in front on right-side rows, and slipped with yarn in back on wrong-side rows.

Row 3: k1, m1, k1, sl1 wyif, k1, m1, k1 — 7 stitches
Row 4: k2, p1, sl1 wyif, p1, k2
Row 5: k1, m1, k2, sl1 wyif, k2, m1, k1 — 9 stitches
Row 6: k2, p2, sl1 wyif, p2, k2
Row 7: k1, m1, k3, sl1 wyif, k3, m1, k1 — 11 stitches
Row 8: k2, p3, sl1 wyif, p3, k2

Continue in this pattern: increase 2 stitches every right-side row (one at each edge) and keep the center slipped stitch pattern. The slipped stitch will always be the center stitch. Work until you have 41 stitches, ending with a wrong-side row.

Section 2: Stone (Color B)

Switch to Color B (Warm Stone).

Row 1 (Right Side): k1, m1, knit to the last stitch, m1, k1 — 43 stitches
Row 2 (Wrong Side): k2, purl to the last 2 stitches, k2

Repeat these 2 rows until you have 61 stitches, ending with a wrong-side row.

Section 3: Slate (Color C)

Switch to Color C (Deep Slate).

Row 1 (Right Side): k1, m1, knit to the last stitch, m1, k1 — 63 stitches
Row 2 (Wrong Side): k2, purl to the last 2 stitches, k2

Repeat these 2 rows until you have 81 stitches, ending with a wrong-side row.

Section 4: Garden Texture (Color A)

Switch back to Color A (Light Sand).

Row 1 (Right Side): k1, m1, *k1, sl1 wyif* repeat from * to the last 2 stitches, k1, m1, k1 — 83 stitches
Row 2 (Wrong Side): k2, *p1, sl1 wyib* repeat from * to the last 2 stitches, k2

Section 5: Smooth Stones (Color B)

Switch to Color B (Warm Stone).

Row 1 (Right Side): k1, m1, knit to the last stitch, m1, k1 — 103 stitches
Row 2 (Wrong Side): k2, purl to the last 2 stitches, k2

Repeat these 2 rows until you have 121 stitches, ending with a wrong-side row.

Section 6: Deep Slate (Color C)

Switch to Color C (Deep Slate).

Row 1 (Right Side): k1, m1, knit to the last stitch, m1, k1 — 123 stitches
Row 2 (Wrong Side): k2, purl to the last 2 stitches, k2

Repeat these 2 rows until you have 141 stitches, ending with a wrong-side row.

Section 7: Final Sand Texture (Color A)

Switch to Color A (Light Sand).

Repeat the Section 4 pattern (Rows 1-4) until you have 161 stitches, ending with a wrong-side row.

Edging

With Color A still attached, bind off loosely as follows:

Knit 2 stitches.
*Slip both stitches back to the left needle (as if to purl), k2tog through the back loops, knit 1.*
Repeat from * to the end of the row.

Cut yarn and weave in all ends securely using a yarn needle.

Finishing

Block the shawl gently to open up the stitches and even out the texture. Soak in lukewarm water with a gentle wool wash, then squeeze out excess water (do not wring).
